The 5 Skin Types

  • Normal: Not prone to breakouts, flakiness, or feeling greasy or tight. Small pores and smooth skin texture.

  • Oily: A shiny face (particularly across your T-zone and chin), enlarged pores, and spots.

  • Dry: Skin that feels and looks rough. Itchiness, flaking skin, scaling or peeling. Fine lines or cracks.

  • Combination: Oily and dry spots, larger pores on T-zone, breakouts and dry patches at the same time, oily skin in summer and dry in winter and flaky area on the scalp.

  • Sensitive: Lots of redness, reactive super easily, development of rashes is common, prone to breakouts, tightness, burning, irritation.

characteristics: small, white, raised bumps on the skin
how they form: Whiteheads occur when a hair follicle/sebaceous gland becomes inflamed. Inflammation can occur as a result of: Increased sebum (oily material produced by the sebaceous gland) production.
how to treat:
- Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)
- Apple cider vinegar
- Retinol and vitamin A
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Salicylic acid
- Lemon juice
- Aloe vera
- Tea tree oil
- Witch hazel

Characteristics: They're slightly raised, although they aren't painful because they aren't inflamed like pimples. May look like a dark speck of dirt is in a bump on your skin.
How they form: Blackheads form when a hair follicle in the skin becomes clogged or plugged. Dead skin cells and excess oil collect in the follicle's opening, which produces a bump. If the skin over the bump opens, the air exposure causes the plug to look black, thus forming a blackhead.

characteristics: They are easily identified upon physical examination as red bumps with white or yellowish centers. If severe, they may be accompanied by additional signs and symptoms surrounding the lesion, such as pain, tenderness, swelling, soreness, and warmth.
how they form: When the skin becomes inflamed due to an allergic reaction to food, environmental allergens, or poisonous insect bites. However, the most common cause of pustules is acne.
How to treat: Apply an over-the-counter treatment like calamine lotion, cortisone cream, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide gel. Stay away from products that can irritate your skin, like cosmetics or sunscreens.

characteristics: a small, well-defined bump in the skin. It may have a rounded, pointed or flat top, and may have a dip. It can appear with a stalk, be thread-like or look warty. It can be soft or firm and its surface may be rough or smooth.
how they form: usually caused by an infiltration of inflammatory cells into the epidermis (intraepidermal) or dermis, subepidermal edema, or epidermal hypertrophy.
how to treat: Apply an ice cube or ice pack covered in a light towel over your papules for at least 10 minutes. Apply ice to your papules up to two to three times a day. Lemon juice: The citric acid in lemon juice is antibacterial. Apply a small amount of lemon juice to a cotton applicator and rub it on your papules.
